Overcoming the Hamster-wheel Syndrome - with Liëtte Smith

Overcoming the Hamster-wheel Syndrome - Ep.3

"Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her"

But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”   - Luke 10:41 & 42

Jesus knows all about that Hamster Wheel we put ourselves on.
We say things like" If I just work harder, I'll be more successful" "If I just loose a few more pounds, people will like me” "If i just, if I just" then off we busying ourselves with our conclusions.
Often I feel I could be dubbed queen of the Hamster Wheel. I sure know how to "get busy" with things.  I often felt like Martha - wanted Jesus to take note of  hat I am doing, wondering why everyone else seemed to get what I wanted without doing what I believed was...

Overcoming the Hamster-wheel Syndrome - Ep.2

Choose wisely. Choose life in Him

Ahh, the hamster wheel. I'm mesmerized by the little creatures endlessly running on their wheel as a never ending treadmill when I go into pet shops.

They seem to enjoy the exercise and jump off when they tire of it. I've noticed for us humans, we too, can easily find ourselves on the "hamster wheel" of life, an endless treadmill of activity going nowhere.

However, we don't seem to figure out how to get off that never-ending cycle of hyper activity.

Watching myself and others over the years it appears that there are several factors that determine our need to stay on "the wheel." I want to address only one of them in this blog. It becomes addictive. We may not enjoy it any longer but now we are addicted to the cycle of continuous chaos and activity. It has become our new normal. We unconsciously or consciously choose to remain irregardless of the detriment to our health,...

Overcoming the Hamster-wheel Syndrome - Ep.1

Don’t get caught on the hamster wheel. A better future is in front of you.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

It’s just another Monday until you realize that this moment has never happened, will never happen again, and anything is possible.

“The meeting of two eternities, the past and the future... is precisely the present moment.” – Henry David Thoreau

So often we get stuck on the hamster wheel, doing the same thing every day, yet we are believing for a different reality or outcome. Rather than getting caught up in the hamster wheel syndrome, learn to lean into the mystery of the moment, connecting the lessons of your past to the potential of your future. Embrace the joy of breath and life and opportunity. God is with us,...

Overcoming Unhealthy Habits- Episode 10

When the Lord looks at our hearts, what do you think He sees?

According to Psychology Today, breaking unhealthy habits requires identifying behavioral patterns and developing a plan for success.
How many people, after a difficult day, head for the refrigerator, or to happy hour, instead of going for a walk, listening to good music or doing some deep breathing?
Our behaviors can quickly develop into habits. To come up with a solution for change requires some investigation and digging, mostly into the depth of our hearts, to see the bigger picture.
The unhealthy habit I want to talk about today is not taking time to carefully examine our hearts with the Lord. If our heart is full of gunk, we are likely to make many poor decisions. "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Proverbs 4:23
Who can truly know the human heart, but the One Who...

Overcoming Unhealthy Habits- Episode 8

Sometimes the best thing was to speak to someone about it, to get the load off my shoulder.

I don’t think there’s anyone, saved or unsaved, that doesn't have a few unhealthy habits in their lives. I know I do. Fortunately, I don’t have as many as I used to. For me, this blog is a very personal one. I’ve seen the effects unhealthy habits can have in my own life. I’ve seen it in the lives of family and friends, and in the lives of people I don’t even know.
There are so many possible unhealthy habits. Like many other things they can be physical, mental or spiritual. Sometimes we’re aware of them and sometimes we only realize it when someone points it out to us. The ones we know about, we kind of sweep under the rug and continue with. The ones that are pointed out to us, we get upset and jump into defensive mode. But the fact remains.
They are...

Overcoming Unhealthy Habits- Episode 2

It takes as long as it takes.

“I will extol the Lord at all times; His praise will continually be on my lips. I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His Name together.” Psalm 34:1
I like to ask myself this question: "Is praise my response of choice to every situation?" It certainly should be. Lately, I’ve been putting a lot of effort into responding to situations instead of reacting. I’m also working on polishing those responses so they don’t sound like reactions!
Every morning when I have my devotions my prayers look like this: I have my mighty bow and arrow stretched back as far as it can go and whoosh, I release and let it go... off to hit a very specific target that I have visualized for every person, topic and need. “Lord, please do thus and such.”
If God does not...

Overcoming doubt & unbelief - Episode 6

Speaking faith-filled words rises out of a heart of trust, a place of "knowing" in God as the way, the truth and the life He called us into.

"Well, that's fine for you, but it won't work for me."
"I know what Mark 11:23-24 says, but it doesn't always work."
"Life is crazy hectic."Words spoken as accepted truth. (Psst. FYI - Fake news)
These statements and more so often pour out of mouths without a thought to the cause and effect they're creating or to the heart they're revealing. "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." Voice is given to what we intrinsically believe. (our 2 cents, our opinion, what we feel). What is spoken will be acted upon. What is acted out results in consequences -(of our own making BTW).
"The mouth speaks what the heart is full of."Matthew 12:34
SO, the question of the hour is, "What are YOU talking about these days?"Speaking faith-filled words...

Overcoming doubt & unbelief - Episode 5

"Lord, I believe, help my unbelief." Mark 9:24
That was the cry of a desperate father whose son was tormented with demonic possession for years. Jesus' disciples were unable to deliver the young man so the father went straight to their leader, to Jesus, for help. The father said to Him, "If You are able to do something, anything - have compassion on us and help us!" Jesus replied, "What do you mean 'if'?" If you are able to believe, all things are possible to the believer."
There are two "Ifs" in this event.
The first "IF" was spoken by the father doubting the ability of Jesus or His desire to help on behalf of the horrific trial affecting their entire family. They had lived with these circumstances beyond their ability for years. They  wanted to see their son set free. "Can You, will You, would You make it stop?" In essence that was what the distraught father was saying...
