David heard the commotion. He saw the giant of a man shout out his defiance against the God of Israel and His people.
They had been at a stand off for 40 days. The giants were taunting the Israelites every morning and evening driving the Israelite army to retreat in fear and dread, with great success.
David, the shepherd boy, said, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?"
King Saul agreed to let David take on the giant but wanted him to wear His armor. Perhaps so that as the men watched from their positions they would think it was the king who was courageous enough to go up against their ferocious enemy. 😉
David said, "I can't wear that! It doesn't fit me. I need to go with what works for me, how God has trained me to fight."
Goliath kept getting closer and saw that it was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him and taunted him all the more.
This giant had an attitude! Others saw him as an opponent too powerful to defeat; David saw a target too big to miss!
He chose five smooth stones from the stream and put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, he fearlessly approached the Philistine.
David didn't flinch. He taunted him back.
"You're coming at me with all your weapons of war, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defiled. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head...and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel...all will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord's and He will give all of you into our hands."
As the giant moved to attack him, David ran quickly to meet him. He reached into his bag and took out a stone, slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead and he immediately fell dead, landing face down on the ground.
David ran to his body, took the giant's own sword and cut off his head.
As the giants saw their dead hero, they turned and ran. I Samuel 17
Is it OK to throw rocks?
Jesus is the rock of our salvation (deliverance). When we take "thus saith the Lord" and hurl it at the enemy, who dares to defy us and our God, the Holy Spirit moves the rock with supernatural swiftness. The impact kills the enemies threats against us.David knew Goliath had brothers. He had four rocks left in his pouch, just in case he needed to take them out too.
We can learn so much from this story.
I'll share one nugget that we can use each and every day to defeat the rebellious roar of the enemy who dares to taunt us and our faith in God.
Use the Word of the Lord, as David did, as Jesus did when He was in the wilderness being tempted by the devil. He said, "It is written." Ka-BOOM! Bulls-eye!
Then, Jesus shed His innocent blood on the cross, went into hell and stripped him of the authority he legally, illegally gained from Adam and Eve.
Then, Jesus rose from the dead and said, "ALL authority has been given unto Me and now, I commission you to go using My authority, and share this good news with everyone. The devil is defeated. Salvation (deliverance) has come."
When we sling the Word of the Lord (rocks) at the enemy of God and His people, we can rest assured...victory is ours in Jesus' name.
