Wait...what? For real?
Have you ever felt like something was preposterous ...completely contrary to reason or common sense... utterly foolish?
And yet, you were being asked to believe it because someone said it was so.
Example:
One of my daughter's students is perpetually late for class. 40 days of school and late every day. During her parent-teacher conference last week she met with the mom and dad to talk about their child's progress in school.
She asked why their son was always late. The mom said, “No, she was early every day but she sat out in the car because she didn't know what time school started.”
What? For real?
800 kids are going into classrooms at the same time every morning. You sit in your car watching this procession and you don't know that it must be time for class? Preposterous!
The mother shared this with a straight face as though my daughter should believe what she said. Not in a million years was that a conceivable story for tardiness - 40 days.
Jesus sometimes had to deal with His disciples saying things that were like, wait what? For real? You're going to tell me that's what’s going on?
Examples:
John 14:8-9. Jesus responded to Philip's request to show them the Father. Jesus replied, "Have I been with you this long and you still don't know Me.? (my paraphrase) Are you being real right now? What?
Consider Moses coming down from the mountain discovering the people worshiping a golden calf. (Exodus 32) When he confronted Aaron, he said, "They gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!" What? For real? Preposterous! It jumped out of the fire all by itself...
An excuse is a lie tied up in the skin of a reason.
One of our pieces of armor, as a believer, is the belt of truth to be buckled around our mid-section. In other words, truth is to be our core strength. (Ephesians 6:14)
I've counseled and dealt with hundreds of people in my lifetime. It's preposterous how often people say things so off the wall and yet, in their minds it sounds reasonable. What? For real? That's the reason you're going to give me as to why you can/can't do XYZ?
Child of God, Jesus is TRUTH. His Spirit, if we are born-again, resides within us. "Love should always make us tell the truth. Then we will grow in every way and be more like Christ, the head." (Ephesians 4:15 CEV)
The TLB translation says it this way: "Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times - speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly - and so become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of His body."
Examine yourselves today...and every day. See that you speak truth, live truth and deal truthfully in every area and so represent Christ to all.
In this way we walk with strength and bring honor to Him.
