During one of Jeremiah's darkest times help came from an unexpected source...literally.
Here's what was going on...Jeremiah was obedient to deliver God's message to the people.
As a result of hearing God's words, the people were so upset (convicted) that they threw Jeremiah into a cistern. They didn't like "that" message.
I've looked inside a cistern in Israel. There is no way of escape. You are stuck in every sense of the word.
Cisterns are HUGE containers, very dark, actually pitch-black inside. They are cavernous and used as reservoirs dug deep into the ground. Cisterns were used to store water, grains, etc.
This particular cistern was empty but the bottom of it was filled with muddy sludge. (Jeremiah 38:6)
An Ethiopian official in the kings ranks observed all that had transpired with Jeremiah. He privately went to the king and asked for the prophets life.
He told the king that he was aware that some political groups had pressured him to kill Jeremiah. He let him know that this wasn't in the kings best interests...to get on God's bad side, by killing one of HIS spokespersons.
The king apparently recognized that he feared God more than the politicians and he reversed his decision.
The king quickly said, "Take 30 men and lift Jeremiah out of that cistern." (38:10)
Ebed-Melek, the Ethiopian official, rounded up the men, some old rags and very long, strong ropes. He called down to Jeremiah and told him to pad himself with the rags and put the ropes under his arms so they could pull him out of the mud.
This official risked his own neck to help someone in a dire situation.
- God used an unexpected resource to deliver His servant.
Whatever you are going through or facing take heart!
God has people in the wings positioned to come to your aid. You may get put in the cistern, sit in the mud awhile and feel like "this is it, I'm done." But God, always makes a way of escape for us.
Our God is a Way Maker. He will send someone to your rescue. AND He also wants to use you to rescue others along the way.
Psalm 124 is a great passage to strengthen your faith in this area.
"We have escaped like a bird from the fowler's snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." (7-8)
Who can you help? Who is in your sphere of influence facing dire circumstances? Ask KING Jesus…how do You want me to help them?
We reap what we sow. (Gal. 6:7) Let's sow helpful acts wherever and whenever we can.
Then, in our time of trouble we'll have confidence that help is on the way.
We recognize it usually comes through unexpected sources as God loves to do extraordinary things through ordinary people.
Be extraordinary!
