He Is Jehovah Jireh
Jesus encountered a young man in Mark 10. This guy had wealth, power, things and yet he felt a void. Something was missing. He approached Jesus and let Him know he had faithfully kept all the godly commands and lived a good life.
Jesus, discerning his heart, lovingly said to him that he lacked one thing. "What?" "I'm doing everything by the book." (my paraphrase) Jesus knew he was holding on real tight to his possessions. He was afraid to let go and give God first place. Somehow "having" things, power, money, prestige, etc. caused him to feel secure, like he had it made, he was important in life.
Things had him. Jesus challenged him. Things were actually holding him in bondage to fear. Fear of losing his esteemed position with his network of friends and business partners. Fear of losing his possessions. They made him feel like he had arrived, he was somebody.
Here's the thing. You can't take things with you into the next life. They are temporal. Eternity is forever. Whatever we have, achieve and do here is good, perhaps in the short brief moment of this life, but it falls far short of eternity. Only what is done for and with Christ remains.
Jesus was prompting this young man to be hands free. To let go of holding on to "this life" so tight that it gave fear a stronghold. "Sell it, give the proceeds to others," Jesus said.
The thought of that struck fear right into his heart. "Oh, no, I can't do that." He turned and walked away sorrowful. Things will never fulfill us. Only God can do that. How about you today? What are you holding onto so tightly? If you lost "that" today what would that mean to you? Would you be ok or would you be lost. What about your identity in the eyes of others?
Jesus invites to open our hands, to let go of the things of this world. They are unable to save us, change us, deliver us or provide for us. He alone, is our Lord, our King and our provider.
Open your hands today and let go...surrender everything you have and all that you are to Him. Put Him first place. Let Him flood you with Himself. He is Jehovah Jireh...the God Who Supplies. Everything. We. Need.
