David's life is filled with stories of conquests. His heart after God is often one of the first things that come to mind.
There are many commendable attributes about David. however, like with all of us, he had faults and sins.
One of the most notorious incidents involved a beautiful woman Bathsheba.
Instead of being out with his men fighting and defending their land, David stayed home. One sleepless night he walked around on the roof of the palace. Somehow I don't think this happened perchance. II Samuel 11 and 12
It seems David knew what he would see if he walked around on his rooftop.
Bathsheba was the wife of one of his most loyal soldiers, Uriah the Hittite.
James 1:13-16
"When you are tempted don't ever say, 'God is tempting me,' for God is incapable of being tempted by evil and He is never the source of temptation.
Instead it is each person's own desires and thoughts that drag them into evil and lure them away into darkness.
Evil desires give birth to evil actions. When sin is fully mature it can murder you!
So my friends, don't be fooled by your own desires!"
David planned a great cover up. One thing led to another.
He made a way for Uriah to be "killed" in battle.
Then the Lord sent Nathan, a prophet, to David with a message.
God's messenger shared the story of a rich man taking a poor man's only beloved lamb to feed a passing traveler. 12:2-4David burned with anger against the man in the story and told Nathan, this guy needs to die because he did such a thing. 12:6
Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man!" He then gave him the strong message from God about the consequences of his actions.
Qualities we condemn the most in others are often our own flaws.
My mom would tell us four kids if you are pointing your finger at someone, there are three fingers pointing back at you.
David recognized his sin against the Lord. He repented. The Lord told Nathan to tell him He had taken away his sin and would not die. But because you did this (coveted, lied, stole and committed murder) you have shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son born to you will die.
Sin has consequences. Sin brings death.
in my book "UNSTOPPABLE: Unlocking Your Fullest Potential" I talk about the weeds, rocks and hard path ground. David got lured and stuck in the weeds, then rocks appeared and ultimately the hard path formed and he was unable to recognize himself in Nathan's story example as he thought he was exempt, being King and all.
We are all responsible for our own heart condition. It's a full-time job to de-rock, de-week and dynamite our soil so that we can be good soil.
David endured the consequences of his actions and went on to have a second child with Bathsheba who they named Solomon...another story for another time.
The lesson we learn from this season of David's life is clearly outlined by our text in James. Watch out for the things you "cover up" as that is an indicator that something isn't right.
Recognize what's happening. Repent. Re-align to His plumb line. Wisdom says, "Nip it in the bud before it blooms into sin and matures bringing death."
