When Faith Abounds

Samuel is mentioned among the faith giants in Hebrews 11.

His life began through a barren, desperate woman. For many years Hannah cried out to the Lord in deep anguish. I Samuel 1-3

She and her husband, Elkanah, made their annual trek to Shiloh to worship and sacrifice to the Lord at the temple.

Eli, the priest, misunderstood her as he saw her praying so earnestly. Her lips were moving but she wasn't making any sound. He accused her of being drunk and told her to put away her wine.

She told him she wasn't drinking. "Don't take me for a wicked woman. I am in great anguish and grief."

Eli then said, "Go in peace and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him." 1:16-17

Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel which means "heard by God."

Are you in a season of barrenness in some area of your life?

A place where no matter what you do or how much you pray, give, or try it just doesn't fly?

In these seasons/places we are sorely tempted to make something happen in our own strength to medicate the pain of lack that we're experiencing, to soothe our impatient soul.

Abraham and Sarah discovered that's not a good idea.

Hannah chose to pour out her heart before the Lord year after year. Her husbands other wife had children and enjoyed rubbing that in Hannah's face further adding to the pain of an empty womb.

"...her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat." 1:6-8

In seasons of barrenness we are often taunted by others, even ourselves, which adds additional pain, stress and anxiety magnifying that we are without something important to us.

"You should be, Why aren't you, How come you can't, When will you???? All designed to move us to take matters into our own hands and come up with a solution...

Samuel was born in God's timing for His purpose.

He become a prophet, priest and the last judge that Israel would have.
He anointed the first two kings of Israel. Saul and then David.
He benefited God's people from his childhood to his graduation to glory.
He continues to benefit us centuries later. His legacy continues.
Again we see that trusting God, waiting for His direction and provision is key.

God's timing is impeccable.

Are you in a season of barrenness in an area of your life?

Keep pouring out your heart before the Lord. He is listening and working everything out for your good and His glory.

Your "Samuel" is on its way. God has heard and He provides.

Hannah promised God she would give her promise received, to His service. Samuel was her "world," her life, her joy and fulfillment...she was no longer barren.

She kept her vow to God. She gave/sowed her all, her best. She did so, not begrudgingly but with gratitude. "My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high"...her song of praise is recorded in I Samuel 2

She, like Abraham with Issac, his promised son, like David, like the widow giving her two mites, like Mary and her alabaster box...Hannah gave her "all" in extravagant worship to God.

God brought the increase.

God blessed Hannah with three additional sons and two daughters.

We cannot out give God. He provides above and beyond. That is His nature...more than enough. Jehovah Jireh. The God of plenty. El Shaddai. Almighty God.

The question for us: In our times of barrenness, will we wait upon the Lord in faith? Will we continue to pour out our hearts before Him in faith? Will we trust His timing and provision or will we work out our own solution?

Samuel was birthed out of Hannah's barrenness.

Samuel continues producing hope and faith...God hears and God answers.

Imagine what God has planned to birth from your barrenness?

Barrenness is a womb prepared for God's extravagant generosity.

II Corinthians 9:6-8,10-11

"Here's my point: A stingy sower will reap a meager harvest, but the one who sows from a generous spirit will reap an abundant harvest.

Let giving flow from your heart, not from a sense of religious duty.
Let it spring up freely from the joy of giving--all because God loves hilarious generosity!
Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything--every moment and in every way.

He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do."

"First He supplies every need, plus more. Then He multiplies the seed as you sow it, so that the harvest of your generosity will grow."
