"Mary broke the jar of expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance (aroma) of the perfume." (John 12:3)
This natural act happened before the spiritual act of Jesus washing the feet of His disciples. (John 13:3-17)
Mary broke the hard container that housed her security/savings precious to her for her future.
Jesus broke open His humanity to serve His followers, who were precious to Him.
Men's traditions are like that hard alabaster jar. Strongholds that keep us contained to take care of #1 first...me! Housed in stone; we hold on to traditions/possessions in an attempt to bring a sense of personal protection and security.
God's ways and man's ways are not the same. (Isaiah 55:8-9) Our man-made traditions/possessions cannot protect our future any more than our savings accounts.
Jesus poured out the fragrance of the Holy Spirit in Him to wash and anoint His disciples; as preparation for their death-to-self so that they might live-fully-alive through Him. He continues to do the same for you and I today.
That's true security now and for eternity. WOW!
Just as people were upset with Mary's extravagance, so people were upset with Jesus' extravagance to "lower Himself to a foot washing servant."
How does this apply to us today? Are you willing to break open your life and pour it out so that others may know Christ? Or, are you living for yourself encased in the hard confines of "what's in it for me?"
Worship is not only singing to the Lord, praying, tithing, giving and reading the Bible.
That's what we do to fill up ourselves, our vessel.
True Worship, that brings glory to God, is pouring out of our "filled" lives to bring others the Good News of Salvation and the servanthood work of making disciples. (Romans 12:1)
Mary's jar was full of perfume, but it didn't become worship until she poured it out. Then the aroma wafted throughout the house.
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, demonstrated, in the pouring out of Himself on a cruel cross, His worship to the Father to do what He had been commissioned to do in the earth.
As you do what you were commissioned to do in Mark 16 and Matthew 28, you too, give pure worship demonstrating your love for Him as you obey His command to "Go and make disciples." (John 14:15 & 23)
Quit just filling up your jar as though life was all about you. It's about pouring out the Holy Spirit in you, as His dispenser, in order to truly live in the power of His resurrection. Ah, pure joy unspeakable and full of glory.
The interesting thing is, the more you pour out upon others so they can come alive in Him, the more He refills your vessel...you'll never run dry of His presence and His glory. So awesome!
Are you willing to break your alabaster jar that you've filled with times in His presence and pour out the true sacrifice of your praise to God?
If so, watch the results...millions of people birthed into God's family. A sweet aroma that fills the heavens, indeed.
(Lev. 3:16 and 4:31 - as the fat burned from their offering the aroma filled the heavens. As we burn off our "fat" - giving ourselves so others may be born-again and discipled, it, too, makes the sweetest aroma in the heavens.)
Can you hear God say, "Ohhhh, what's that smell? It's heavenly!"
