But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10:41 & 42
Jesus knows all about that Hamster Wheel we put ourselves on.
We say things like" If I just work harder, I'll be more successful" "If I just loose a few more pounds, people will like me” "If i just, if I just" then off we busying ourselves with our conclusions.
Often I feel I could be dubbed queen of the Hamster Wheel. I sure know how to "get busy" with things. I often felt like Martha - wanted Jesus to take note of hat I am doing, wondering why everyone else seemed to get what I wanted without doing what I believed was expected of them?
Yep getting on that hamster wheel is easy. Expectation, Society, friends and family can trigger those inner dialogues that see you running nowhere fast. but how do we get off?
Jesus reveals the key in verse 42: Mary has CHOSEN the good portion.
Choice is the ultimate act of unconditional Love.
Martha and Mary both had the same choice options - Martha just never realized she had a choice - she felt her duties, her traditions her busy-ness was all she could do. Mary chose not to be busy and so saw the value of just sitting at Jesus feet and soak up all He was giving.
Jesus love for them did NOT change.
Each choice has a consequence.
Martha's hamster wheel lead to frustration and an opportunity for Jesus to "be real" with her and speak Truth. Mary's sitting and soaking filled her up to overflowing.
Taking time to reflect I realized when Truth was spoken, I finally saw the Hamster-Wheel. Stepping off it was so much easier from there. I take with me the lessons learnt but now I know what it looks like, feels like, smells like.
I CHOOSE not to get back on. I CHOOSE the good portion.
